The sudden snowfall made them all feel like kids again--well, younger kids, as at thirteen they hardly qualified as much else. The freak snowstorm that struck the evening before and resulted in Hikari and Kouki sleeping over at Jun's house because of how bad the roads were had settled, leaving in its place a bizarre tranquillity. The whole city seemed asleep even when they woke up mid-morning, the vicious winds of the night coming to an end and leaving snow half a foot deep that sat perfectly still. The bright colours coming off the houses' Christmas lights, especially the really lavish, overdone display Jun's parents put up year after year, cast their reflections onto the virgin white calm that covered the ground.
They gathered in front of the big window in Jun's living room, holding mugs of hot chocolate and wearing tacky, garishly-coloured sweaters, because it was really the only way to sip hot chocolate on a snowy morning. For once, they didn't look enviously at all of Jun's presents, wrapped up and piled beneath the brightly-lit and heavily decorated tree, taunting him for another week yet. There was something else to occupy their attention, and for the day presents would be at the back of their minds. A rare accomplishment for them.
“It looks so beautiful,” Hikari said, eyes wide as she pressed her forehead to the window to peer around what lay in front of it better. She hadn't even done her hair up yet, since Jun's loud wake-up call had led pretty quickly to making some hot chocolate and gathering to look at the snow. Her hair clips lay forgotten upstairs.
Kouki sipped carefully at his steaming mug of hot chocolate, the mini-marshmallows bumping against his lips. “We should do something more than look at it.” Tapping his fingers against the side of the mug, he tried to think of something.
Taking larger sips that ought to have burned his mouth, Jun had no marshmallows left in his mug. He was used to doing it by now, having spent his life building up a resistance and burning his tongue. Looking over Hikari's shoulder, he thought hard on what they could do, only to spit his hot chocolate out onto the window as the idea hit him. “Snowball fight!” He dropped his mug down on the table so clumsily it was a miracle that it didn't spill, not that it had anything left in it.
The other two had barely turned their heads away from the view outside to face him by the time Jun had run out of the living room entirely, running to the closet for his coat. He had his bulky wool sweater halfway off, shedding the tacky orange-and-white for his much more stylish coat, which was also orange and white. Every coat, jacket, sweater, and a great deal of his shirts, since he first moved in and made friends with Hikari, ran off that colour scheme, always with something green thrown in. Most days, it was a scarf, which he was in great danger of strangling himself with for how hurriedly he pulled it on and tightened it so strongly.
“Come on, let's go!” He continued to shout commands at them as he pulled his boots and coat on at the same time, and it would have been an impressive display of dexterity and multitasking if he could do either properly. “Anybody who isn't outside in the next minute will be fined one million dollars!' With his gloves halfway on and his hat sideways on his head, he rushed out the door, still frantically dressing as he raced to get a head start on the snowball fight.
Hikari and Kouki shared a beleaguered sigh as their friend ran out of his own house in a hurry, leaving them awkwardly in his living room, still sipping at their half-full mugs of hot chocolate. They didn't know how exactly to react to his outburst, but it was far from unusual for him to get an idea and excitedly chase it, leaving the other two in the dust.
"We should probably go after him." Kouki rolled his eyes as he placed his mug down, and started toward the closet for his own coat. "He shouldn't be left alone for too long."
Giving a tired nod, Hikari stretched, trying to shake the lingerings of sleep from her body. "You're right. He's probably making snowballs already, so he's going to have a big lead over us." After one last pull of her mug, Hikari joined Kouki in getting dressed to go outside, fearing the hastily-assembled firepower Jun was no doubt amassing outside.
Taking a bit more care to get everything on firmly, Kouki and Hikari got dressed up and warily stepped outside, glad they didn't find Jun waiting in front of the door with more snowballs than he could properly hold in one cradled arm.
"Let's team up," Hikari whispered. "We can split up, make our snowballs, and then turn on him when he least expects it." She smiled craftily, and after Kouki nodded and smiled back to her, she hurried off to the left, already dipping her pink-gloved hands into the snow to pull up enough to form her first ball with.
Kouki sighed, looking into the snow to find the very clear signs of an eager Jun on the rampage. His tracks went off around the other side of the house, so he decided to instead head for the tree at the front of the yard, intent on making his base on the other side of it. The harsh winds made sure even underneath the massive oak tree, there was still plenty of snow to gather up and begin forming an arsenal with.
Around back, Jun had his scarf laid out on the ground, a pile of clumsily snowballs that weren't really very round at all stacked up. It allowed him to quickly make his ammunition and drag it along for quick access. His neck was a little colder because of it, but after being pelted by his stockpile he was certain his friends would be much, much colder than he was. Going back around the way he came, Jun held the end of his scarf tightly, pulling his pile along close behind him.
Hikari wasn't going to risk such a strategy, given that she already had enough exposed skin from her legs, and didn't want to get any chillier. Instead, she folded one arm in and piled her snowballs onto it, which limited how many she could hold, but if Kouki timed it right they were going to flank him and make up for his head start.
Peering from behind the tree, Kouki saw Jun growing nearer, probably looking to get his fortified position, and he didn't peer for too long so he could get the drop on him. He also kept his scarf on, but since he was in hiding behind the tree, was free to pile all his snowballs, which were all very perfect, neatly in a pyramid. He wouldn't have to move from his station.
The plan almost went off flawlessly, but Jun decided to turn around at the last second to see if he was being snuck up on. It was a range precautionary instinct, and he was reward for it with a snowball to the face. Hikari had already tossed it at him, intent on getting his hat, but instead she nailed him right in the face. He shouted out from the sudden impact of cold, and immediately got fired up. He squatted down, grabbing snowballs and tossing them madly at the girl. He had surprisingly decent aim, and started pelting her as the majority of his snowballs made their mark.
Kouki came from behind with his own barrage. They thudded against Jun's coat, and the blond shouted about how unfair this team-up was as he tried to defend himself against both. At least, until one struck the back of his head and the shattered remnants of the snowball ended up going down his coat. Bits of pressed-together snow slid down his shirt, melting from his body heat and giving him a sensation so odd he was stricken by laughter as he shook and twitched, trying to pull the ice out.
His dramatic flails ended with him on the ground, still laughing as his friends stepped up and finished unloading their arsenals on him. They both laughed by the end of it too, and soon enough all three of them piled up onto Jun on the snowy ground, laughing the rest of the morning away.
“Okay, next round! And this time, any alliances will carry fines of one million dollars!”
